We convinced the label to release something else that was a little more rock-oriented as the first single and it did nothing. So “Brandy” was a very pop record for the kind of thing we (normally) did. We started as a bar band in New Jersey, we all went to college together and played bars and fraternities.We would cover Rolling Stones (songs) and things like that. Looking Glass was an interesting band, and I think part of the difficulty that we had in maintaining a career was (the band) was a little schizophrenic. The one that we know now, we recorded it in New York City, and it was on the album we put out. At least a week or two.We recorded “Brandy” two or three different times with various producers before we got it right.ĮL: That’s not the one that we know now. How long did it take you to write it? Was it one sitting or did this sort of evolve? It just seems that the craft and every word is so meticulous in this story.ĮL: It took quite a while.when I write, it is very tight and the rhyme schemes are tight, so the main part comes out very quickly, but all the adjustments and to get everything exactly right took quite a while. I I thought Randy was an unusual name for a girl, it could go either way, and (the song was about) a barmaid, so I changed it to Brandy. Then I started writing the rest of the song, and it was about a barmaid. The name was derived from a high school girlfriend I had whose name was Randy with an “R.” Usually when I write - I still do it the same way I did back then - I strum some guitar and kind of sing along with the first things that come to mind.
I don’t say this often, it’s the perfect song.ĮL: Brandy is a made-up individual.
